There exist at least two different approaches:
1. Combination of various single media to form a combined and integrated presentation or application (- content related approach). The combination of single media forms ONE new integrated medium
- the single media are synchronized to one another in terms of content
and complement one another in a meaningful manner in order to achieve a
combined effect
- each single medium is applied in an way, it can fully profit from its individual strengths. Were it has weaknesses, another single medium will be applied instead, since all media forms are generally available
- the presentation is graphically integrated on a common graphic surface
- no separate pop-up windows like at hypermedia
- the timing is well designed and organized in a meaningful way
- the single media are being presented synchronized to one another in terms of timing
- Example: an interactive multimedia CD-ROM, that has a common graphical user interface for all visual single media. Visual and auditory parts are well combined in terms of content and synchronized in terms of timing
2. Utilization of different media platforms or different distribution channels forcross platform presentation of information (- channel oriented approach).<
Here In turn two non-uniform attempts can be monitored:
• redundant (- all channels get the same information, i. e. MPEG 4)
• complementary(- each channel transmits, what it can do best).
