| Finding cheap apartments to save a little money always seems like a good idea for those who are struggling, and there are times when someone has no other choice. However, even though people assume that the landlord will take care of things, there are many who won’t. This leaves the tenant two different options. They can pay for things on their own, or they can move. Either way, the tenants are not saving money, they are spending more than they had hoped.
Cheap apartments don’t have to be bad apartments, but they usually are. There are reasons why the places are so cheap. If a landlord could charge more they would. That means someone looking at cheap apartments really has to pay attention when they are looking it over and deciding if they want to take it. Take it from someone who saw her fair share of them in college, there are many things that can go wrong. Things can go wrong quickly and in a big way.
One particular incident that sticks out in my mind was the building my friends lived in while we were in college. These apartments were very cheap, and quite dingy and dark. Since it was a group of guys, they weren’t concerned about the dingy and dark. They just wanted cheap apartments. They got what they wanted. They lived there for about a year. It was almost time for them to leave or renew the lease for their second floor apartment when the toilet fell though the floor into the apartment below. They moved out the next day, as you can imagine. It was a lucky thing that no one was hurt, and that the apartment below was empty at the time.
Not all cheap apartments will be this bad, of course, but when things go wrong it can be hard to get an absentee landlord to fix something. There are times when a tenant in cheap apartments can withhold rent, but the rules and laws on this are tricky. Many find it is easier to just fix problems on their own rather than to go through a long legal process or to move, both of which will end up costing more. The landlords know this and that is why they don’t seem to concerned when something comes up. Not all of them are this way, of course, but that won’t be known until after someone moves in and the problems begin.
