Chemistry Article - A Personal Reflection |
| I used to find chemistry deadly dull, boring, and awful. It is no wonder why. The way it was taught in high school simply wasn't interesting. No one explained anything to me in the class. All we did was memorize facts that didn't make any sense. We would learn about electron orbits, acid-base reactions, and the like, but it all seemed so meaningless to me. I couldn't see the point of any of it – it was just memorization. Physics was always a lot of fun for me, and I had a good mind for math, but until I started reading a lot of chemistry articles a few months ago, I had no idea that it could be fun or interesting.
Recently, chemistry news has become big news. Almost every day there is a new chemistry article in the papers detailing some important scientific discovery. It gets so that even my best friend – a professional chemist – has trouble keeping up with all of the articles about chemistry. One of the most important and fascinating areas of research is brain physiology. Chemistry, neurology, psychology, and biology have all fused recently in the study of neuroscience, and scientists seem to be on the verge of discovering the biochemical basis of thought. I even read one chemistry article that claimed that, within a decade, we would understand consciousness well enough to model it! That means that we might be able to build our own artificial intelligence machines!
Of course, some of the chemistry research is in areas that are quite a bit bleaker. A few weeks ago, I read a chemistry article about pollution in the world's oceans. It was examining the breakdown of various toxic substances, including pesticides, heavy metals, and environmental fertilizers. What it found out was shocking. Apparently, these chemicals take longer to break down than we ever realized. The contamination of the food chain has become very serious, and is becoming more serious by the day.
That is why I began to keep up with the chemistry article news. Not only is chemistry fascinating, but understanding it is pretty essential. With so much wrong with the world today, we need to know everything we can about how to protect ourselves and our environment from hazards and contamination. All of the neurology news is also important, because it helps us understand the basis of our own thoughts and gives us the potential to realize a brighter future. Ultimately, isn't that what science is about?
