There are books, pamphlets, lectures, and audiotapes on how to start a not for profit, and all of them make it look much easier than it is. It is not easy. Learning how to set up a non profit is actually one of the most challenging tasks that you can undertake. In many ways, starting a business is easier. First of all, people in the world of business are motivated by economic interests. It won't be hard for you to find the right people for the job. You need people who are both passionate and informed, devoted to a cause but not fanatical. It is a hard thing for us in the activist community to admit, but many of our comrades are flakes. There are a lot of people out there who have good ideas and good intentions but don't get the job done. There are other people who are so stuck in their utopian fantasies that they are not grounded in the real world. Learning how to start a not for profit means learning how to find people with the right combination of passion and practicality. This is easier said than done. Of course, there are many other difficulties that you have to unravel before you can understand how to start a nonprofit. The business angle can be very tough. With the war on terror and other national priorities taking the forefront, funding for non profit organizations is at a low. Applying for grants is an art, and as the grants become scarcer, learning how to write grant applications correctly becomes more and more important to the success of your nonprofit endeavor. Anyone who wants to know how to start a not for profit has to learn how to get funding, and this is easier said than that. Of course, you also have to be able to sell yourself to the community. Nonprofit work involves even more networking than business. Despite the popular image of activists as awkward, they actually have to have quite good people skills in order to succeed in their work. Anyone who has successfully mastered how to start a not for profit will tell you – it is all in the networking.
