The Common Traffic Light |
| There are times that I wonder who in the world is in charge of the timers on the traffic lights around my house. They never seem to be coordinated and when one light changes, the next one is the opposite. Traffic can end up being backed up for miles because one traffic light isn’t on the same timer as another one. It makes me crazy.
The traffic light on my street works perfectly if you pull forward far enough in order to let the motion sensor know that you’re there. Within seconds, the light will change and you can go on your merry way. If you’re unlucky enough to get stuck behind someone who is obviously not familiar with the traffic light, you could sit there for 3 or 4 minutes. That makes me even more crazy. I sit in my car trying to send the person in front of me a subliminal message to move their car forward but usually they aren’t on the same wavelength. It can be so frustrating. I’m quite sure that the person in front of me finds it humorous to see my frustrations in their rear view mirror.
Not every traffic light can sense when there is a car waiting for the light to change. Some traffic lights, however, can sense when there are quite a few cars waiting for the lights to change. When you’re in a turning lane, the light may even sense that you’re waiting and activate the turning arrow so that you can turn. Of course, sitting at the lights that don’t have any modern technology that can sense when a car is waiting, you may end up sitting there for several minutes. If you’re on the verge of being late for work, you might end up being a few minutes late afterall.
Then there are the drivers out there who don’t pay any attention to the color of a traffic light and drive however they want, no matter how much havoc they create. I’ve seen so many people fail to slow down while going through an intersection and hit someone else who was in the right of way. Every year, lives are lost because of people who fail to stop for a traffic light. It becomes a question of whether or not they didn’t see the light or they just didn’t feel that they needed to stop. No one likes to stop at a traffic light. I personally hate waiting for a light to change colors or for an arrow to allow me the right to drive. However, those traffic lights are invented in order to keep order on the roads and keep drivers safe. Remember that the next time you’re frustrated.
