Strike action claims Eredivisie matches |
Sunday's Eredivisie fixture between league leaders PSV Eindhoven and second-placed AFC Ajax is one of three matches to be called off in the Netherlands due to a police strike.
Key game The decision to postpone the top-of-the-table encounter was made by Eindhoven's mayor, whose responisibility it is to judge the safety risk for spectators and citizens, following an announcement by police unions that they would take industrial action over a pay dispute. Earlier in the day, Feyenoord's visit to AZ Alkmaar and VVV Venlo's home game with FC Twente had also been called off due to the strike action.
Negotiation The mayor of Eindhoven, Gerrit Braks, said: "Due to the strike there will not be enough security personnel available to guard the arrival and departure of the fans so I have to cancel the match. We have been monitoring the negotiations and had hoped they would be successful. I was disappointed to hear [the two parties] had come to nothing eventually." No new date for the match between the top two has been set, although AZ's game against Feyenoord is expected to go ahead on Wednesday, while PSV 's UEFA Cup meeting with Tottenham Hotspur FC on the same night could be in doubt.
